Dogs and sanitation
Contributed by: steve Watkins on 7/21/2006

Consistent with most articles written on dogs in Colorado, your "Dog Park Tips" neglected two of the most important tips. 1) Bring a plastic bag along to clean up after your dog and 2) If the park is near a residential neighborhood, minimize your dog's barking.

Side note: Many communities have closed dog parks, beach communities outlaw dogson beaches, and laws are passed to try and get dog owners to clean up after their pets. The disease and water contamination from dog droppings and urine is extensive and serious. It is something not to be discussed in Colorado and it isunpleasant and requires responsible owners. Please don't give me the defensive and tired responses of "it's only a few irresponsible owners", or "most clean up after their pets", or "I clean up after my pet poops and now it's ok for children to play there". The fact is dogs and droppings are filthy and disease ridden, the parks are littered with droppings, bike paths and hiking paths throughout the city smell in places where pet owners have made it their dogs toilet, it is bad enough that local governments have to place sanitary stations for pet owners and hang sanitary bags up in the slight hope that they may clean up after their pet, and contamination of water resources is common. So, next time you write about your dog "feel good" situations, please remind them to be considerate of others and attempt to clean up after their pets.
