HONK! If you're ready for a great musical
Contributed by: St. Mary's Academy on 4/1/2008

St. Mary's Academy will present HONK!, a rollicking version of Hans Christian Anderson's beloved classic The Ugly Duckling brimming with fowl, frogs, barnyard critters, and a sly old cat, all guaranteed to charm audiences of all ages.

This all-Academy musical features 70 students, kindergarten through twelfth grade, performing as cast members, cast ensemble, and an additional menagerie of barnyard singers performing before the show and in the finale.

Performances of HONK! take place April, 17, 18, and 19 at 7:00 p.m. with a 2:00 p.m. matinee on April 19. Performances will be in the Forum of the High School building located at 4545 South University Boulevard in Englewood. Tickets are $6.00 and may be purchased at the door.

George Stiles composed HONK! with Anthony Drewe creating the book and lyrics. Roberta Hamilton-Griggs, St. Mary's Academy performing arts teacher, is the director. Mitch Samu, formerly of the Country Dinner Playhouse, is musical director, with Hannah Wilson returning to St. Mary's Academy as choreographer. Honk! is presented with permission of Musical Theater International.

HONK! has won numerous awards, even edging out The Lion King for the prestigious Lawrence Olivier Award for Best New Musical of 2000. It bounces along on clever word play and puns and humorous but valuable pointers on parenting and the dangers of prejudice.
