Last week the sixth graders in
Mrs. Story
's sixth-grade classes became their Dictionary Day word. They began by hunting for unfamiliar words in their social studies texts, science books and independent reading of Newbery novels. They then worked independently to discover the definition, part of speech, how to pronounce it and wrote an original sentence using their word. Then the fun really began. They BECAME their word. And more importantly they taught their word to 30 other people; students and adults. By the end of the day, Leawood had 51 more vocabulary words in our repertoire than we did before. The sixth-graders will never forget their own word, or many other words. Some of the wonderful vocabulary floating around on Friday were: Tesseract, thrush, usurpations, impel, etymology, impeachment, totalitarian, quorum, juxtaposition, aristocracy, and prudence. How many do you know?
