Peace garden grows at Montessori School Ken Caryl
Contributed by: Mindy Hanson on 5/13/2008

Montessori School at Ken Caryl http://montessorikencaryl.org is thrilled to be the recipient of a grant from the Littleton Garden Club! The funding is specified to help grow and enhance the Peace Garden on the school grounds.

This $400 grant was intended to promote gardening and educational horticulture programs. In following with this goal, MSKC will use the funds from the Garden Club to expand the Peace Garden project and also to add another raised bed to be enjoyed by the toddlers. In order to ensure the continued health of the garden and preserve resources we will be adding a dripline irrigation system to the garden.

The generosity of the Littleton Garden Club extends beyond the financial portion of the grant. The Montessori School at Ken Caryl will also be provided with a large community of local gardeners who have volunteered to help maintain and expand the Peace Garden.

In 2006, MSKC staff and parents planned and planted the Peace Garden using the model of the Schoolyard Habitat Program developed by the National Wildlife Federation. In the spirit of the Montessori approach to education, the Peace Garden was planned with input from the Kindergarten children, and all students participated in the planting.

The Peace Garden has a texture garden consisting of Colorado native plants and xeric plants. These plants were chosen with the intention of giving children the opportunity to see perennials return year after year, to provide a suitable habitat for pollinators including butterflies and hummingbirds, and to give children the opportunity to freely explore the diversity that exists in plants that grow where they live. These plants include chocolate flower and bubblegum mint, favorites of our students.

A second section of the Peace Garden is for vegetables. The students start plants from seed in the classroom, nurture them, and then transfer the plants to the garden. The students water the garden daily while wearing special hats to show that they are working. Students then gather vegetables to share during snack time at the school.

What a wonderful cause! A garden for children to learn about growing food, deepen a connection to the earth, and enjoy the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables! Wonderful habits to last a lifetime. And I'm such a fan of Montessori schools. Long may this Peace Garden prosper!

What a great idea! Kids love to learn about nature -- what better way than their own garden? Especially that they grow their own veggies for snacks -- what a learning experience.
