Columbine band lights up parade
Contributed by: Greg Morris on 12/9/2007

The Columbine Rebels Marching Band recently braved the cold and lit up the night at the Parade of Lights in downtown Denver on November 30-December 1.Band members were excited toparticipate in the Parade of Lights for the first time in several years, which has become a holiday tradition and popular event in downtown Denver each Christmas season. Instrumental music students from the marching band, orchestra, and color guard were decked out in their holiday finest, wearing navy blue fleece costumes with white, glittery snowflakes, and lots of bright, blue strings of LED lights. From a distance, the Columbine Band was a sea of frosty blue snowflakes, accented by silver garlandand snowflake hat-toppers that all contributed to the"blue glow."

The Columbine Band played a jazzy version of Here Comes Santa Claus to introduce the Parade of Lights' mostnotable participant--Santa, of course. Band Director, Kyle Rausch, led his Rebel Band on the 2-mile parade route for the first time since joining the Columbine teaching staff in 2004. Assisting Mr. Rausch was the band's professional staff, which includes Brett O'Neil, Mike Alvarez , Heather Davis, Tom Cudmore, Jeff Gleason, and Shauna Hodges, the guard instructor.

Preparing for the Parade of Lights began in late August, when band parents and Mr. Raush came up withthe costume and lighting design theme and selected the music. Once the Columbine Band was accepted into the Parade of Lights, it took about six weeks to create approximately 80 costumes, purchase and attach around 150 strings of lights, decorate the costumes with garland and snowflakes, and power the lightswith around 500 batteries. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Steve and Sandy Montoya as well as Steve's mom, who donated her basement to this project, the Band Boosters had a convenientelf workshop for creating the band's costumes. Several dedicated Band Booster elves(parents and a few students)donated manyevenings to make sure theparade participants looked great! Everyone's efforts resulted in an enjoyable parade experience for the Columbine Rebel Band as well as the honor of placing 3rd in lighting and overall appearance as well as 3rd place overall from the 11 marching bands who participated in the Parade of Lights. We're already looking forward to lighting up the parade again next year!
