There is a quote that states, "Wake up every morning with the thought that something wonderful is about to happen." On the morning of June 28, 2003, I never imagined how wonderful my something for the day would be.
It started as an ordinary summer day in Colorado. I was off with my dad to a running race in the hills. I had just recently returned from the San Diego Marathon, so my hopes for a great race were high. Unfortunately within miles I was faced with the realization that the day had something different planned. Much to my displeasure I walked most of the race.
Regardless, there stood my dad at the finish line with a smile and a hug of encouragement. Tears of disappointment filled my eyes. Then in a life changing proclamation I exclaimed, "I'm never running again!" "Okay honey, whatever you think", Dad responded in his supportive yet puzzled "dad" way. "I'll start biking, yeah, that's what I'll do," I announced matter-of-factly. As if, first, having one bad race meant failure in the sport. And second, that biking was the definite solution. What a joke! It was becoming more obvious that the day had something different planned. Dad was willing to find out what, so despite the seemingly senseless reasoning, he took me straight to the bike shop, running gear (and sweat) still intact.
As I walked through the doors of the enormous shop, I was unaware that my something wonderful for the day was waiting inside. Frustrated yet determined, I pranced into the store in search of my future, as an athlete. Little did I know that what I would find would be much more. Within minutes I was directed straight to the "she's a runner wanting to be a biker" section. I jumped on something that looked shiney and fast and was off. I screamed around the corner, much to dad's embarrassment, just to run directly into
Scott
, the general manager of all people!
Now embarrassed myself, I jumped off and coyly questioned, "Oops. Am I allowed to ride this in here?" "No" was his response without hesitation. Did I ever feel stupid! Fortunately, within moments (seemingly hours) a smile broke and the reassuring words, "Just joking. Of course you can. And let me know how else I can help you." "You can get me out of here", I thought. Instead, I politely smiled and walked the bike back to it's proper place.
The entire twenty-three steps to the rack I could not stop thinking about the encounter! "What was that all about?!" "Who was he?!" "Why am I so attracted to this guy?!" "Wait, I'm here to get a bike; it's all about the bike!" "Come on, snap out of it!" Thoughts flooded my head. I had to talk to him. I had to find out more about him. I was starting to wonder if this was part of my something wonderful for the day.
Truly, after nearly an hour talking while dad searched for a helmet he just had to have (although his bike sat collecting dust in his garage), I came to realize that yes indeed this was my something wonderful, not only for the day, but for a lifetime. Scott and I were engaged four months later, married a year to the weekend that we met, have a baby girl who is now one, and have another baby girl due this spring. Wonderful? Absolutely. Oh, and yes, I got the bike. After all, it's all about the bike.
