One hot summer, two cool teenagers

It was a hot summer in Southwestern Ohio in 1951. The old swimming pool was a favorite spot for the teenagers to cool off and they often spent the whole day there. In fact, you were sure that many lived there.
The day was hot, the water warm and the sparks were flying. I was sure that I could repair the feelings between my best friend,
Patty
, and her ex-boyfriend,
Roger
, as they seemed to be a perfect couple. They were always together, holding hands and smiling. We had all been friends during the school year as we were involved in square dancing and other school functions. I was as close to Roger as I was to Patty by the end of the year.
Roger asked me to come out of the pool and talk to him seriously this afternoon and I gladly obliged. What did he want? Me to try to talk Patty back into going with him? Nope!!! He wanted a date and Roger and I ended up walking away holding hands. Patty didn't seem to mind one bit.
That was in the eighth grade. Our relationship evolved and grew deeper year after year through high school. There were a couple of bumps involving this girl or that boy but we always came back to one another.
1956 and graduation was coming close. I had planned on going to college and Roger hadn't decided yet as to what his future would be. That all changed on graduation night when he proposed to me and placed a fabulous diamond on my finger. WHAT A NIGHT!!! Two great events in one.
December of that year we were married and recently celebrated out 50th wedding anniversary in Littleton, CO. We have three children -- Kevin, Denise and Julie -- all married. Our family includes eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren along with our dogs ( Mimi and Noel) and our macaw (Marley).
Now things have slowed down and it's time to enjoy our life and do what we desire. It has been a great trip and the goal is in sight. But first maybe we'll make it 55 or 60 or 65 years.
