Supporting troops is child's play
Contributed by: Sandi Rhynard on 5/1/2008

Lani Rhynard turned 9 last week. While most kids her age would be concerned about the birthday theme - she was focused on incorporating an outreach project with her birthday party.

Lani recently found out that many men and women soldiers in Iraq are not receiving letters of encouragement or care packages from the U.S. She decided to use her birthday party as a means to collect items for these soldiers serving our country.

Her goal was to send off 24 packages. Her birthday invitation requested that kids bring outreach items instead of birthday presents. She also contacted family, friends and neighbors to try to collect as many items as possible.

On April 25, Lani and 9 of her friends gathered in her basement. The kids wrote notes, decorated envelopes and stuffed packages containing many goodies.

At the end of the day the kids assembled 64 packages! It was a wonderful experience for the kids and will bring much joy to the soldiers who receive them!

Happy Birthday Lani!

As this 9 year old can show us ... with just a little effort big things can happen!
It's child's play!
