Naomi Pequette, a 2007 Littleton High School graduate has been named the 2007 National Young Astronomer by the National Astronomical League. Thousands of high school students from all over the country were eligible for the award.

Naomi graduated from high school in three years at the age of 16 with Highest Honors. She will attend the University of Denver this fall and will major in physics and complete a minor in astrophysics. Naomi plans an astronomy career and at this point plans to focus on educational outreach programs after completing the appropriate advanced degrees.

Naomi's interest in educational outreach has developed by virtue of her extensive volunteer activities. At the age of thirteen she became a volunteer at the Space Odyssey exhibit in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science where she continues today. Much of her responsibility is to interact with visitors and share information about astronomy and answer question of museum patrons. Naomi also conducts presentations for patrons on various astronomy topics. She was instrumental in developing an Astronomy Club for the student volunteers at the museum. The club has conducted numerous activities and programs on astronomy topics for the student volunteers.

Shortly after joining the museum, Naomi became a member of the Denver Astronomical Society. She has become the youngest person to qualify as a telescope operator at the University of Denver's Chamberlin Observatory. At public nights and open houses she talks with visitors about astronomy topics of interest and periodically makes presentations to groups of visitors. Naomi is currently the coordinator for Youth Outreach programs.

As winner of the National Young Astronomy award, Naomi was awarded an all-expense paid trip to the National Astronomical League national convention in Portland during the month of August. She was given a membership in the International Dark-Sky Association and a life time membership in the McDonald Observatory, which is near Austin, Texas. At the national convention Naomi will be presented with her award and a $3000 fully computerized Meade telescope.

This summer Naomi is working part-time at the University of Denver in science workshops for high school students and at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum in space and science workshops for elementary and middle school students. She is also assisting Dr. Robert Stencel with data analysis.
