Department of the Air Force Civilian Desiree M. Teeple has been named Category I Civilian of the Year for 2006.

Selection was based on the individual's exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities, significant self-improvement, specific achievements, notable accomplishments, and community service and support.

Ms. Teeple was one of 11 people honored at an awards ceremony. She was one of five nominees from a total of 55 nominees competing for the annual award pertaining to her field and category--Secretary, Office Automation, Military Personnel.

Ms. Teeple is a secretary employed at the Western Air Defense Sector, McChord Air Force Base, Tacoma, Wash.

She is the daughter of Toni F. Solano of S. Field Court, Littleton, Colo., and granddaughter of Theresa Gomez of S. Eliot St., Denver, Colo.

In 1998, Ms. Teeple graduated from Columbine High School, Littleton.

According to Teeple, the men and women of the Western Air Defense Sector are busy 24/7 guarding the skies of the United States from their facility on McChord Air Force Base in Washington State. An Air National Guard unit, the Western Sector is the larger of two sectors responsible to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) for air space security over our nation. The Western Sector's area of responsibility spans west from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, an area that comprises more than 72 percent of the continental United States.

"To receive this award is a true honor and privilege because I really feel like I am representing all the hard work that is put forth by everyone in the military personnel office.," Teeple said. "All of my accomplishments for this last year were only possible because of the support from my supervisor, Larry Hector, the men and women of WADS and my husband Stephen Teeple. Taking care of the personnel issues for the men and women that protect our country is the very least I can do to show just how much I support them."
