Deer Creek bikers/drivers should be cautious
Contributed by: Dan Hatlestad on 6/2/2008

Inter-Canyon Fire/Rescue urges bicyclists and motorists to exercise caution in the Deer Creek Canyon area. Heavy bicycle and motor vehicle traffic can be expected in Deer Creek Canyon, High Grade Road and Turkey Creek Canyon on weekends. Thanks to its beauty and terrain, these areas have become popular for recreational bicycling.

"Unfortunately we have already responded to several bicyclists with serious injuries in Deer Creek Canyon this season," says Dan Hatlestad, Information Officer for Inter-Canyon Fire/Rescue. "Deer Creek Canyon is a relatively narrow road with hazards such as loose gravel, limited shoulders, tight curves and even deer on the road."

"Warmer weather is returning and more bicyclists are out on the roads," says Bill Lucatuorto, Fire Chief of Inter-Canyon Fire/Rescue. "We urge both bicyclists and motorists to share the road and to travel responsibly."

Inter-Canyon Fire/Rescue offers the following safety tips to bicyclists when riding on the road:
· Always wear a bicycle helmet;
· Ride on the right-hand side of the road, in the same direction as other vehicles;
· Obey all traffic signs and signals;
· Properly signal all movements;
· Yield to drivers and pedestrians, as appropriate; and
· Avoid riding at night, but if you do, be sure to use a headlight visible from a distance of 300 feet and a red reflector visible at a distance of 200 feet, as well as wear reflective clothing.

Inter-Canyon Fire/Rescue provides fire, rescue and emergency medical services to approximately 55 square miles along Highway 285, Turkey Creek Canyons, and Deer Creek Canyon. Using five fire stations and 15 pieces of apparatus, the 60 volunteers serve the Inter-Canyon Fire Protection district with rapid and high-quality responses.
