Sheriff's Office employees accused of wiretapping

While conducting a non-related investigation, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office learned that one or more of the Arapahoe County Detention Center employees may have been listening to other employees' telephone conversations within the facility.

As a result of this discovery, a parallel investigation was initiated involving the Office of Professional Standards and Pubic Safety Bureau Investigations Services.
It was determined that two employees were allegedly monitoring at least one other employee's telephone calls using the detention center telephone system. The investigation also determined that that a manager was allegedly aware of this activity and did not stop it.

On September 18, 2009, a criminal case filing was presented to the District Attorney's Office of the 18th Judicial District. The criminal charges in the case filings allege a violation of CRS 18-9-303 (1) (a) Wiretapping prohibited against two civilian employees of the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office. The criminal charges in the case filing also allege a violation of CRS 18-9-304 (1) (d) Eavesdropping prohibited against one commissioned employee of the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.

All charges are class 6 felonies which carry a penalty ranging from one to one and a half years incarceration and/or fines ranging from $1,000 - $100,000.
