Jeffco SWAT team fatally shoots man in standoff

On October 22nd at 5:28 p.m. Jeffco dispatch received a 911 call from a woman reporting a disturbance at her home at 11345 W. Crestline Dr., near the intersection of West Belleview Avenue and South Simms Street.

The woman claimed that her adult son was upset and had discharged a firearm inside of the residence. When deputies arrived on scene they heard additional gunshots coming from within the home. Jeffco's communications center sent a phone message (Reverse 911) to 175 homes in the direct vicinity requesting residents to stay within their homes, away from windows and doors until they received further notice.

The Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team and the Jefferson County Bomb Squad were paged at 6:15 p.m. to respond to the address on Crestline Dr. During the 5-hour standoff, SWAT negotiators worked tirelessly to negotiate the surrender of the barricaded suspect. On several occasions SWAT operators introduced chemical munitions (gas) into the home in an effort to encourage the suspect to come out. The suspect refused to surrender.

As the evening wore on, the suspect became less communicative and eventually negotiations broke down. SWAT Team members entered the home at approximately 12:45 a.m. and were shortly thereafter confronted by the suspect. The suspect displayed and then pointed a handgun at SWAT operators, forcing them to react with deadly force. The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was quickly removed from the home and carried to an awaiting ambulance. The 34-year-old suspect was transported to Swedish Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Per protocol, the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team ("Shoot Team") is investigating the circumstances surrounding the officer involved shooting.

The suspects name is not being released at this time. More information will be released as the investigation progresses.

Jacki Kelley is the public information director for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
