County and mayors to honor teens


Arapahoe County Commissioners and local elected officials will honor 20 teenagers who have overcome personal adversity during the County's Metropolitan Mayors and Commissioners Youth Awards recognition event at the Hotel Denver Tech, 7 p.m., March 1..

The Metropolitan Mayors and Commissioners Youth awards were established in 1986 to recognize youth, ages 13-19, who have shown outstanding achievement while overcoming difficult situations in their lives by making positive changes and by exhibiting strength and determination in the face of adversity. .

The nine counties that participate in the MMCYA program are Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson and Gilpin Counties.

MMCYA is a three-step recognition process with recipients first being honored at the city level. Individuals are then screened for recognition at the county level, and finally four are selected from each of the nine participating counties to be honored at the metro banquet on April 23, 2006 at the Seawell Ballroom at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts..

The Metropolitan Mayors and Commissioners Youth Awards is coordinated by a metro steering committee comprised from nine front range counties..
