County awards $1.1M for community development

ArapahoeCounty recently awarded more than $1.1 million in Community Development Block Grants for public facilities, housing and services that will benefit low -to -moderate income residents.

CDBG funds are provided to ArapahoeCounty's Housing and Community Development division from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grants provide funding to nonprofits and governmental agencies to promote the health, safety and betterment of low -to -moderate income persons and neighborhoods. The following list highlights some of the projects and organizations that will receive funds in 2007:

§City of Glendale, to build pedestrian access from a high-density residential area to public transit access on Colorado Boulevard.

§Food Pantry support, to address basic food needs of rural residents in Bennett and for low-income residents along the Broadway corridor.

§Doctor's Care through the Integrated Health Care Initiative to provide mental health care for Littleton residents.

§City of Sheridan, to address drainage issues for several blocks on Clay Street.

§Project Lifesaver, to provide active response equipment for locating wandering Alzheimer's/disabled patients.

§Meals on Wheels, to provide hot lunchesfor elderly and disabled residents, and Project Angel Heart, to provide meals to chronically ill people.

§House of Hope, a homeless shelter for women and children. Staffing will be funded by ArapahoeCounty and the City of Englewood, while the hot water heater replacement will be funded through the City of Centennial.

§Housing rehabilitation and homeowner fix-up grants for low-to-moderate income homeowners, administered by the City of Englewood and the City of Littleton.

§Jewish Family Services, to replace the original boiler and heating system in a group home for developmentally disabled clients.

§SouthSuburbanParks and Recreation District, to build a safe playground area for children at ProgressPark.
