City garners environmental award

The City of Littleton was awarded the silver level of environmental leadership at the 10th annual Environmental Leadership Awards October 20. The awards recognize Colorado organizations with gold, silver and bronze designations for voluntarily going beyond compliance with state and federal regulations and for their commitment to continual environmental improvement. The awards are sponsored by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Pollution Prevention Advisory Board and the Colorado Environmental Partnership.

"I am pleased to be part of a program that recognizes so many companies and other agencies for their leadership in helping to make Colorado a greener state," said Governor Ritter. "It is my hope that the voluntary efforts of these companies - to go beyond what is required in the state's environmental regulations - will set an example for others to follow."

Littleton Mayor Doug Clark attended the ceremony and accepted on behalf of the city. "I am so proud of our citizens and our Green Team of city employees. It is obvious that Littleton residents care deeply about the environment. Many of our programs have been in place for decades such as Christmas tree recycling, the Summer Cleanup Program, leaf and tire recycling, the Household Hazmat Roundup and others that wouldn't be successful without our partnership with citizens," Clark added.

In 2008, Littleton was named a Bronze Partner. Obtaining the silver level means an organization is committed to meeting the gold criteria in less than three years. The City of Littleton and the Town of Aspen are the only two local governments among the 39 Silver Partners.

Membership in the program is open to all types of organizations and businesses from large corporate entities to small businesses, government agencies, nonprofits and academic institutions.
