Baseball as life
Contributed by: Joan Reichart on 3/29/2008

Baseball has been an almost constant companion on my seventy-five year journey through life. From the night I hung out the window of my college dorm to catch a glimpse of Eddie Matthews when he came to pick up his future bride to the years housing minor league players when I Iived in Tampa, baseball has been a big part of my life. A favorite birthday celebration finds me at a ballgame. When it was my job to tend to my parents' final years, the Saint Paul Saints provided the needed diversion to get me through some frustrating days and months. My "bucket list" is shorter because I have attended a World Series Game, an All Star Game and a Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

In January, 2006, hurricanes and an increased cost of living forced me to leave Tampa. How fortunate I was to relocate to an area that provided a fine major league team. Spring and summer evenings in 2006 usually found me in front of the TV getting acquainted with the Rockies. Naturally, many of my new friends are also baseball fans. Their generosity made it possible for me to attend several games at Coors Field. Long before the miracle of 2007 I had come to love this group of highly talented young men. After several years of watching overpaid, attitude prone Yankees, I was seeing baseball being played as it was meant to be. These men not only played with skill and precision but also the "old fashioned" way: with a joy that infected each other and all the fans.

2007 found me just as involved in the games and when the added bonus of the World Series run was included I was thrilled. Even watching the games on TV, I am sure I worked just as hard as the players and the crowd at the ball park to pull out those wins. 2008 will again find me in front of the TV or at Coors Field cheering a great young team. I'll jump for joy when they win and mope when they lose. No matter how the 2008 season plays out, I'll be back with the same enthusiasm in 2009, 2010 and onward until old age finally slows me down.

Watching a game from a suite at Coors Field with my baseball buddies has been added to my "bucket list" and I hope to be able to check it off before the end of the 2008 season.
