My husband Mike comes from a baseball family. Growing up in NJ, his Mom and Dad were avid Yankee fans, and he and his brother were die-hard Met fans, they even had season tickets for several years. It must have made for some very interesting family conversations! Ever since I met Mike, he has talked about attending the 6th game of the 1986 World Series where a ground ball hit by Mookie Wilson went through Bill Buckner's legs and the Mets beat the Boston Red Sox, and went on to win the World Series in seven games.
After moving to Colorado in 1995 I was sure that he would have trouble embracing a new team, but he embraced the Rockies as he did the city and quickly became a Rockies fan as well. Mike takes our daughters, Olivia (10) and Emily (8) to several games a year and they always bring their gloves, hoping to catch the errant foul ball.
In 2006 he brought them to a game and they were all ready. They had their gloves, and they were seated in prime "foul ball territory." Matt Holiday was up at bat, and he hit a foul ball right in their direction. This is where the story gets a little murky. According to Mike, the ball was headed straight for Emily, and he "gently moved her away" so she wouldn't get hit by the ball and hurt. He then proceeded to catch the ball hit by Holliday. According to Emily, her Dad got so excited about catching the ball that he "pushed her out of the way and onto the ground and almost knocked her out" so
he could catch it. He will never hear the end of it! Watching the Rockies from a suite at Coors Field would probably be safer for everyone, especially if Mike is around!
