I Love the Rockies This Much

Let me tell you how much I love the Rockies. I love the Rockies because they brought major league baseball to Colorado. In the years before the Rockies came, the Denver Bears and the Denver Zephyrs were fun, but Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan, Johnny Bench and many other great players of the day only came to Colorado via radio and television. Then, one sunny Colorado afternoon, Eric Young blasted the very first home run as the very first batter for the Colorado Rockies and won the hearts of the 75,000 fans packed into Mile High Stadium. With that dinger, the Rockies won the love of most of the baseball fans west of Busch Stadium.
We were amazed by the talented but arrogant Larry Walker, the eccentric slugger Dante Bichette, and the scrappy catcher Joe Girardi. Walt Weiss dazzled us with his play at short stop and Vinny Castillo made slamming fast balls into the bleachers look easy. Andres Gallaraga loved us as much as we all loved and admired him. Don Baylor and the team struggled, but fans filled the stadium to see them. People from Kansas, Nebraska and all the neighboring states came to see our Blake Street Bombers. What a thrill - major league baseball - Randy Johnson, Barry Bonds, Derek Jeter and the others - right here in Denver.
Soon the beautiful Coors Field joined the line-up of modern super ball yards. The Rockies made some trades and drafted young players and what do you know, they won the pennant in 2007!
How much do I love the Rockies and why do I want to take 11 friends to the game? Picture the scene of Eric Young hitting that homer. Now, picture Todd Helton galloping in from third against the Dodgers and tossing his helmet to the sky then throwing himself into his Rockies teammates at the plate because they knew they had won the National League Championship. Translate those thrills and all the others in between into millions of pounding heartbeats and thousands of screaming fans pouring out their excitement. That is how much I love the Rockies!
