I am writing on behalf of my five year old son,
Spencer, a true Rockieholic, who would be over the moon to sit in a suite at Coors Field.
Spencer always seemed to enjoy watching baseball as a toddler, but had lots of other interests. Tractors, bulldozers, and anything related to firefighting were his obsessions. A recent trip to Tucson to watch spring training changed all of that.
Our family had great tickets to see the Rockies win games against both the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers. The smaller fields meant that Spencer got to be right up next to the players. He got thumbs up, smiles and waves from many of them. For the first time, Spencer actually sat and watched all the way to the ninth inning. As I watched him, I noticed he was mesmerized - and not just by the cotton candy and lemonade.
Now he's bonkers over his team. He owns three Rockies shirts, which are now the ONLY shirts he will wear. It has motivated me to keep up with the laundry, that's for sure. We are heading out this weekend to buy some Rockies Crocs he has been saving up for. He tells anyone who will listen that he'll be a Rockies player when he grows up.
Endless hours are spent in the backyard batting, throwing, and running with the imaginary Rockies lineup. He created the Rockies players lookalikes on Wii so we play them not only in baseball but the other games too! When his T Ball team was pondering names for their team, he was NOT entertaining any other options but the Rockies. He will only eat his ice cream out of the little Rockies helmet he got at Dairy Queen. And when he heard Tulo was out with an injury, little Spencer started to cry. It's still a very touchy subject for him.
I have taken advantage of his interest to teach him more about reading and math. He's learning more about numbers and letters as he's looking at the uniforms, and also I'm teaching him to figure out how many runs the other team is behind, how many strikes are left andother math concepts toprepare himfor kindergarten this fall.
It is fun to watch Spencer get excited about the team, especially since the fair weather fans seem to have faded away. I've always loved the Rockies, and I love having them be "our thing".
Mark my words, in 20 years you'll see some very proud parents and big brother at Coors Field watching "Byro" (his nickname for himself, a tribute to "Tulo").
Spencer, you "ROCK"!
