On the initial listening of
The Flaming Lips, a mixed melody of
The Shins and
The Who come to mind, but after listening
further into the Flaming Lips' starter "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song
(With All Your Power)," on their new album,
At War With the Mystics, lead vocalist
Wayne Coyne reveals his deep raspy voice.
The tracks on
At War With the Mystics all have diverse sounds, and are
completely original, yet breakthrough. Different sounds that would
not be considered smooth and melodic are achieved by the Flaming
Lips in this album, that many other groups of this time would not
be able to get away with, for instance the chirping of birds in the
song "My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion," which is not just random, but
actually ties in with the lyrics. The album's stronger tracks are
definitely the hit single "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" and the
popularly downloaded "The W.A.N.D. (The Will Always Negates
Defeat)." The thing that is so special about this group, is no
matter how many hits they produce, each has its own defining sound.
The Flaming Lips are known (not by too many) for their hit "Do You
Realize," which was featured on their album
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. One of the weaker songs
on this album that seems to drag on a little excessively, would
have to be "The Sound of Failure/It's Dark...Is it Always This
Dark?" The content of this song is good, however it could have been
edited more closely.
The Flaming Lips are set aside from other
rock groups, for not only their unique and varying sounds, but also
the content. This band is bold and fearless, when it comes to their
intense social commentary. One of the most controversial lines, in
a mocking tone, appears in "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song," which reads,
"If you could blow up the world with the flick of a switch / would
you do it? / If you could make everybody poor just so you could be
rich / would you do it?" Greed, and the economic problems of the
world are some of the main problems explored by this band. The
Flaming Lips enjoy stirring up the waters with any provocative
topic possible. They will be traveling through Denver this summer
and are sure to have a hell of show.
