The Vines
are at it again with their newest album release
Vision Valley
. Right from the starting tracks, the album reveals the upbeat and tempestuous manner of the
Nirvana
-like Aussie rockers.
Vision Valley
includes 13 tracks of completely original material. The Vines use
Vision Valley
as a tool of expression and as a podium to convey emotion, thoughts and criticism. The album's first song
Anysound
, The Vines' way of welcoming their listeners into their music, opens with a fresh chord and upbeat sound, but a very similar pattern occurs in too many of the Vision Valley songs, such as
Nothin's Comin'
,
Fuk Yeh
and
Gross Out
. These songs are worth listening to, but are better when separated out, so the illusion of listening to the same song for a consecutive 20 minutes does not occur.
The Vines were successful with their new song
Going Gone
, as far as achieving a rapturous essence of guitar and bass and insightful lyrics go, but once again, The Vines just cannot seem to get away from repeating chords and following the structural patterns found in so many of their songs. While
Going Gone
and
Take Me Back
may conform to a particular sound, it is the lyrics that make these tracks worth listening to. The Vines excel in poetic songwriting, which is most evident when the lyrics of
Take Me Back
are examined: Well the road is long / But I know I can survive / Been away so long / Anyway I saw what I could find. This is just one example of the many intuitive and perceptive lines expressed by The Vines in their new release.
The Vines are a generally young band, having only been founded in 2001 and have already exchanged drummer
David Oliffe
for drummer
Hamish Rosser
and guitarist
Ryan Griffiths
. They can be expected of much greater music than
Vision Valley
in the future, and their progress is worth monitoring as they fine-tune their talented, yet raw sound.
