From the start, I've been caught in an Avalanche
Contributed by: Brooke Theis on 11/28/2005

This is the story of a nine-year-old girl.  No, she did not have any health problems; she did not have a tragic story to evoke pity.  She was just an ordinary 9-year-old girl, well, not exactly ordinary.  This girl grew up reading the sports section every morning at breakfast.  She loved every sport, following every Colorado sports team season by season.  Her favorite sports team was the Colorado Avalanche.  On school nights she would beg her dad to let her stay up to watch the games, and to the dismay of her mom, she would be allowed to stay up hours past her bed time to watch the final outcome for the Avs that night.  The next day she would avidly read all the analysis of the game and at recess would trade statistics with the boys.  They would never believe she was a true sports fan until she proved herself by knowing way more than any of them about her favorite teams.  At Christmas time all the children in her family received one big Santa present.  The only thing she asked for was Avalanche tickets.  She received an Avalanche shirt and a pair of tickets to attend a game later that season. She lived to watch the games and follow the stats.  The year hockey went on strike was the most depressing year ever in sports for her.  She eagerly awaited any news about settling the strike.

That little girl was me, Brooke Theis.  I am now a sophomore in college and should be studying for finals instead of writing this essay.  Once earlier this semester I met a very attractive boy on campus but told him right away we would never be friends because he was wearing a Red Wings shirt. He was very surprised until a smile crept across his face and he exclaimed, “You must be an Avalanche fan.”  I told him I was and even had to prove it to him the same way I had to prove it to the boys on the playground long ago. Being a college student means I am very poor.  I by no means can afford season tickets or even single tickets to a game.  I also attend an out of state college which means transportation is an issue as well.  One of my friends at college is an avid Calgary Flames fan.  When schedules for this season were posted we started planning a road trip to Colorado to watch the Flames battle against the Avs.  We did not realize tickets were so expensive, so now I might not be able to see the Avalanche in person all season.  Winning this suite would be awesome because I would be able to see my favorite sports team and also prove to all my friends that the Avalanche are truly the best team ever. When I saw this ad in the paper over Thanksgiving break, I decided, “What did I have to lose?” Only a few hours of studying, and anyway, what is more important, good grades or the Avalanche? We all know the answer to that.
