The Metro State Men's Swimming and Diving team scored two wins in tri-meet this weekend at Colorado College this Saturday, December 2, 2006. In addition to outscoring the host team 57-55, the Met Men also outswam visiting McMurry State, from Abilene, Texas.
The women's team was outscored 33-72 by Colorado College, and 41-66 by McMurry State despite wins by
Chelsea Bates in the one and three meter diving, Kathy Lind in the 200 yard backstroke, and
Elizabeth Michael-Trumbull in the 50 yard freestyle.
For the men's diving, freshman
Ken Rhoades distanced himself from second place by 120 points in the one meter competition with 308.50 points (a new school record, and national qualifying standard) and out dove the competitors by 108.8 points with a total of 303.9 in six dives from the three-meter board. Another freshman,
Uriah High placed third in the one-meter with 184.75 and second on the high board with a score of 211.1.
The men swimmers won the opening relay with a time of 3:42.02, paced by lead-off man
Jake Haffner who recorded a national B-cut time in the 100 yard backstroke of 52.49 seconds. Three events later, freshman Elizabeth Michael-Trumbull sprinted to first in the women's 50 yard freestyle in 27.37 seconds. This was followed seconds later by another freshman,
Justin Terasus, who broke the 22-second barrier with a winning time of 21.97 in the men's 50 yard freestyle. Fellow freshman
Stuart Kemmer and
Mike Himel, of Littleton, rounded out the field with times of 23.15 and 26.27.
In the 400 individual medleys, Metro sophmore
Theresa Irwin swam a respectable mid-season time of 5:21.63, whereas her team mate on the men's side, freshman
Paul Bunge won the men's race by over 15 seconds with a time of 4:28.41.
In the 200 yard butterfly, sophomore
Reid Sutton swam to fourth place in his first try at that distance in 2:25.70. The women and men came back with the other half of the twin swimmers, Laura Michael-Trumbull, and freshman sprinter Stuart Kemmer both placing third in the 100 yard freestyles with times of 1:01.54 and 55.37. New team member Mike Himel placed 6th with a 1:00.77 and Justin Terasus recorded a sub-50 second 49.91 which was a second and a half ahead of the competition.
For the backstroke events, the Metro swimmers dominated both the men and women's events with sophomore
Kathy Lind winning by over 2 seconds with a time of 2:17.88 and team and class-mate Jake Haffner and freshman Paul Bunge taking first and second on the men's side with times of 1:56.71 and 2:01.42 respectively.
In the 500 freestyles, sophomore
Danielle Kehoe touched fourth with at time of 6:45.59 for the Met Women. Metro's
Evan Venrick outpaced the field by over 11 seconds for first with a time of 5:06.04, with team mate Reid Sutton finishing 5th in 5:55.44.
The final two 400 yard freestyle relays belonged to both Metro's women and men to finish a fast mid-season meet and cap the men's domination. The women distanced themselves by over 6 seconds with a 3:57.23 and the men stroked to a 7 second win with a time of 3:20.91.
Both teams will travel to Kearney, Nebraska Saturday to swim against conference rival University of Nebraska-Kearney on the women's side and Morningside College from Sioux City, IA on the men's side. Go 'Runners.

Freshman Ken Rhoades was named North Central Conference Men's Diver of the week on 12/5/06. As noted on
gometrostate.cstv.com, "Rhoades qualified for nationals and set a school record in the one-meter competition with 308 points at Colorado College, Dec. 2. The score is also the top performance in the NCC this season. Rhoades is now qualified for nationals in the one and three meters."
The co-ed team looks for a win this weekend as they travel to Kearney, NE on 12/9/06 to take on both Nebraska-Kearney and Morningside College from Sioux City, IA. Go 'Runners!
