5 Colorado Lacrosse Players Crowned National Champions
No. 1 Brigham Young University defeated University of Oregon in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) National Championship at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas, Texas, on May 19th. BYU's starting line-up consisted of
Christian Kikumoto, Paul Sabey, Jordan Harris and
Tyler Monteath-all former Colorado High School lacrosse players. Also from Colorado,
Tyler Sabey, a Freshman, was relied on heavily by the team as a long stick mid-fielder. BYU set a school record by going 20-2 for the 2006-2007 season.
Some impressive statistics include: Tyler Monteath, midfielder, 2004 graduate Columbine High School, 2004 All-State Colorado, 2007 MCLA 1st Team All-American, and 2007 RMLC 1st Team All-Conference. Jordan Harris, defenseman, 2003 graduate Arapahoe High School, 2007 MCLA 2nd Team All-American, and 2007 RMLC 1st Team All-Conference. Christian Kikumoto, goalie, 2002 graduate Cherry Creek High School, 2002 Rocky Mountain News MVP Award Colorado High School 5A Lacrosse Championship, 2007 MCLA Honorable Mention All-American, and 2007 RMLC 2nd Team All-Conference.
It has been said that being on a team is like being part of a family. Well, BYU takes that to a different level with brothers Paul and Tyler Sabey, both Heritage High School graduates, playing on the team together this season. In fact, BYU's past rosters could read like a family tree. Christian Kikumoto's brother
Charles was an All-Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference defenseman in 2003. Siblings on the team has become as normal to BYU as winning.
The MCLA is a national organization of non-varsity, college lacrosse programs. With over 200 teams in two divisions, 7000 players, the MCLA represents the fastest growing segment of college men's lacrosse. Its nine conferences are spread across the country, from coast to coast. The MCLA provides a governing structure much like the NCAA, with eligibility rules, national polls, All-Americans and a national tournament to decide national champions.
