Wyoming soccer continues spring training in Tucson
Cowgirls Play NCAA Tournament Teams Arizona and UTEP
Laramie, Wyo. (March 28, 2006)-- The University of Wyoming
soccer team beat Arizona, a Sweet-16 team from last year, and tied
UTEP, another NCAA Tournament team last year, as they continued
their spring training last Sunday on the campus of the University
of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.
The Cowgirls opened the day with a 2-1 win over Arizona, who
lost to eventual National Champion Portland in the Sweet-16 last
fall. After falling behind 1-0 to the Wildcats, the Cowgirls
quickly answered when
Corey Thieman scored a header on a corner kick
by Halee Davis. The Cowgirls then took the lead for good when
Christine Nagel picked up a loose ball in the
box for the game winning goal.
Directly after the Arizona game, the Cowgirls squared off
with former Western Athletic Conference rival UTEP, who advanced to
the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament. After 80-minutes
of scoreless soccer the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Jamie Scarcliff
earned the shutout win in net for Wyoming. Following the Cowgirl's
second game, UTEP and Arizona played to a 0-0 tie.
"It was a great day for our team," said UW head coach
Anne Moore. "We played two very tough NCAA
tournament teams and had two solid games against them. I thought
our defensive line of Corey Thieman,
Christina Best, Laine Hubbard,
Rachel Schetrom and Carolyn Clarke had an
especially great day. Jamie Scarcliff had two solid games in goal,
made some great saves and allowed just one goal. Jessica Brown also
had a great day in the middle.
"Overall we really stepped up against two quality opponents
and did a great job. It is important to continue improving as a
team with every practice and every game this spring. Our goal this
spring is to get our younger players experience against some high
quality teams, and this they definitely got that last weekend. "
The Cowgirls will continue spring training this Saturday as
they host their annual alumni game. The game will be played at 3
p.m. at either the UW Soccer Stadium or Jonah Field at War Memorial
Stadium (depending on the weather). Prior to the game, the current
UW soccer team will be signing autographs during the UW football
scrimmage at the WAR beginning at 1 p.m.
