University of Wyoming golfer Dan Silva, of Littleton, was named the school's Athlete of the Week for the week of May 5. The Wyoming senior attended Arapahoe High School and is captain of the Wyoming golf team. He's majoring in economics, and isthe son of Donna and Rick Silva. Here is a Q&A session with Dan.

How long have you been golfing competitively?

"My first competitive tournament was when I was 15 years old. I got a pretty late start compared to most of the golfers I play with, but I still have a lot to learn that most players have already figured out."

Do you have any other hobbies other than golf?

"I like to read a lot of non-school books when I get a chance. Otherwise, most of my free time is spent involved with golf. It's such a social sport that even if I'm not competing, I can go out with friends and have a lot of fun. Also, I love hanging out with my little brother, Eric. He's 10 now and he's getting to the age where he is able to play sports and carry on conversations about a lot of things."

Did you always want to continue your golf career after high school?

"Once I got into golf during my freshman year, it was all I could think about to get good enough to make the high school team. I finally made the varsity team my senior year and I decided during my senior year to give it a shot playing college golf."

You are an extremely good student (A near 4.0 student in economics), is it hard for you to stay caught up on all of your schoolwork with all of the class you miss traveling to golf tournaments?

"It's definitely not easy. Playing a sport isn't a lot different than working a job for most college students, except for the travel. During our traveling, we have very little time for homework or studying because of the tournament schedule. That makes it really difficult to stay caught up with school. Trying to manage my time is probably the most difficult task I have as a student-athlete."

What are your goals, as well as the team's goals, for the upcoming Mountain West Tournament?

"We want to win, there's no question about it. Winning the MWC tournament is our only chance to make Regionals. However, our conference is one of the best in the country for golf, and I believe that our goals are just to play our best and hope it is good enough to win."

You have improved every year of your career at UW; what do you attribute that to?

"Experience. I came to UW having played golf for three full years and, as with any sport, the more experience I gained, the more I learned how to be a better player. I still have a long way to go, but improving every year is a big goal of mine."

What is your most fond memory as a member of the University of Wyoming golf team?

"What I will remember the most is traveling with the team. We are a close group and there are only six of us, including the coach, that travel. I believe that all of the guys on this team will be close friends of mine long after we graduate and we will always remember the great moments from playing golf at UW.

What professional golfer do you enjoy watching most?

"I enjoy watching Tiger Woods the most. He is the epitome of a professional golfer and he is who we as college golfers are trying to be like. I admire his ability to be the best for so long and it's amazing to see some of the shots that he can hit under so much pressure."

You are graduating in less then two weeks, what are your plans after graduation?

"Well, I am going to attend graduate school at CSU. Sorry. I'm a Colorado kid, but I promise that even though I am attending CSU, I will never be a Rams fan. After that, I plan on pursuing a career as a professional golfer?"
