In 2007, when Chatfield's girls swim and dive team won the Jeffco 5A League Championships for the first time in the school's history, the swimmers knew that they wanted to feel victory again. This past weekend, their dreams came true.
The competition started Friday night with the preliminary session. At the end of Friday night's session, the 22 girls representing Chatfield were confident but still aware that Wheat Ridge and Green Mountain were trailing right behind them. With nearly all of their swimmers returning for the finals session on Saturday afternoon, the Chargers' spirits were high and all the swimmers, divers, coaches, and spectators were ready for what they knew would be a day filled with mind-blowing performances and unusual amounts of excitement.
As the day progressed on Saturday, the Chargers were amazed themselves at how well each individual was swimming. By the end of the meet, they all realized that their goal of being League Champions for the second year in a row had become reality. While all the swimmers swam their races with all their heart and above the coaches' expectations, there was one swimmer who stood out to everybody, even to those beyond Chatfield's team.
Shelley Perkins, a junior, was awarded the Daniel J. Lunger Pineapple award for her outstanding performance in the pool throughout both days. Shelley won both her individual events, the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, and also helped lead her relay teams to coming in first.
At the end of the meet, with only one race remaining, all swimmers' eyes were on the pool, filled with anxiety. For Chatfield, the 400 freestyle relay proved to be a small team filled with heart, respect, and true determination. Knowing it was their last race of the weekend, the team of four was full of energy and ready more than ever to jump in the water. After the four swam the race with everything they had, a voice came over the loud speaker announcing that the relay team had just broken a record previously set in 1988. For the team consisting of
Jenny Bates, senior,
Shelley Perkins and
Kylie Carlton, juniors, and
Katherine Glassner, sophomore, this was definitely the highlight of their swim season thus far.
As for the rest of the Chargers, the once-goal of becoming two-time League Champs has finally settled in, knowing it was a team effort made possible by every swimmer and the two divers representing the school,
Sara Moore and
Rebecca Sutton. The team accomplished their dream because inside every Chatfield swimmer, as they each know, there is a whole lot of "Charger Pride."
