No one can remember when Cherry Creek has lost their last dual girl's tennis match which isn't too unusual because CCHS has won about a zillion state championships in row. So
Chatfield's Senior High School's 5-2 victory over perennial tennis powerhouse
Cherry Cherry High School (ranked #2) is fairly impressive and a good sign the Chargers (ranked #3) are ready for this weeks regional competition (May 1-2 at the Ken Caryl Ranch House) and the state competition May 8 - 10 at the Gates Tennis Center.
Even though Chatfield has won straight four Jeffco team championships and have only lost 3 out of 280 league matches during the last four years, the team has never beat Cherry Creek before Monday.
Chatfield junior,
Sara Palmer, summed it up, "It's a great feeling. We finally got our mojo together."
Kelsey Brading (CSH) at #1 singles won by forfeit. #2 singles,
Lindsey Sanders (CSH) looked sharp beating
Madhuui Kumer (CC) 6-4, 6-2.
Stephanie Pepper (CC) defeated
Ashley Sanders (CSH) 6-0, 6-2. Chatfield's strong double teams won 3 out of 4 matches. The Charger's number one doubles team of
Melissa LeMar and
Kelley Pickens battled (CC) Corin Hill and Cassi Welg, 6-1,6-3. Both LeMar and Pickens were able to return their opponents hard serves for winners and hit a lot of good angled cross-court shots.
Sarah Layman and
Dani Lutes (CSH), who recently won first place in last weeks
prestigious Cherry Creek Invitational Tourney, won a close tie breaker 4-6,6-2, 10-7 against Catlyn Schnell and Steph McCauley. At #3 doubles,
Ali Grush and
Sara Palmer (CSH) hit a number of forehand passing shots and used their quickness to get to a number of difficult return shots to beat
Nicki Ostter and
Sami Henri of Cherry Creek 6-3,6-3. In #4 doubles
Jana Valcuhova from the CzechRepublic and CC sophomore
Lexi Pollet beat Chatfield's
Kimberly Arfsten and
Anna Gleave6-2,6-0.
