Normandy Farms has offered the Littleton area boarding, lessons and training for over 100 years. As population grew, many equestrians drove that big SUV farther south of the area looking for greener pastures. Normandy has always worked to provide quality programs, horse-boarding, training and lessons for those interested in Hunter/Jumper and Dressage, and now, Normandy Farms is one of the last full service stables serving the area.
Now riders who have previously made the daily commute to ride are excited about the benefits that a local stable offers. In a tongue and cheek awareness campaign,
Stan Penton
, owner of Normandy Farms, has recently calculated what the average commuting rider from Littleton to Parker is spending.
Penton calculates that "this theoretical commuting equestrian travels 11,423 miles per year, spends $3044 in gas, $2,724.61 on wear and tear to car, travel time of 14,143.99 minutes (235.73 hours), $1379.02 lost productivity wages, and $728 for Starbucks. Total cost $7,875.63"
This campaign is actually serious business. According to Penton, "Pricing pressures for feed, bedding and fuel have risen astronomically over the past several years, and suburban stables have been at a disadvantage."
What suburban stables lack in pasture they make up in locality. Penton adds, "Slightly higher boarding rates in the suburbs now make a lot of sense to someone paying $500 to $600 per month just to visit their animal."
This awareness and environmental concern has led Normandy Farms to create an environmental vision plan with goals. Penton thinks it's pretty "heady stuff for your average stable, but we already use a recycled animal bedding, have goals to address not only our fuel use, but also waste, building efficiency and overall carbon impact."
Normandy hopes that horse commuters take them up on the offer to call them to calculate what they are spending.
