The Daniel L. Schaefer Athletic Complex (9750 W. Hampden Ave., Denver) is located on a tract of land that was originally owned by the adjacent Federal Correctional Institution. In 1972, the Federal Government dedicated 90 acres of Federal Correctional Institution land to Foothills Park & Recreation District. Fifty acres became home to the athletic complex with eight baseball/softball fields, nine multi-use fields, batting cage, picnic shelters, playground, disc golf course, Jason Jennings Adaptive Field, Foothills Indoors Sports Arena and Foothills Maintenance & Service Center. The other 40 acres was added on to the Foothills Golf Course (3901 S. Carr St., Denver).
The complex name was changed from Foothills Athletic Complex to the Daniel L. Schaefer Athletic Complex in 1993 to honor former Colorado Congressman Daniel L. Schaefer. Mr. Schaefer was a former member of the Foothills Board of Directors and instrumental in the land acquisitions at the complex.
