Division championship for Chatfield 8th grade boys
Contributed by: Amy Slavin on 2/20/2006

The Chatfield 8th grade boys Gold basketball team clinched the Divisional Championship with an undefeated regular season record of 13-0 to secure the West Division #1 seed in the Gold Crown Foundation State Championship Tournament.

The Mighty Chargers were chosen as the Denver Nuggets "Team of the Week" for the week of January 15, 2006. According to Kevin Petty, Gold Crown Foundation Director, "Selection criteria to become the "Team of the Week" were based on accomplishments on the court, in the classroom and in the community. This is a very high honor keeping in mind that the Gold Crown Foundation's competitive basketball league is the largest in Colorado."

As winners of "Team of the Week," the team enjoyed free tickets to the Nuggets vs Chicago Bulls game on Feb. 8.

The team averaged 51 points per game to opponents 29 and had three games where every player on the team each had at least one basket, one assist, one steal and one rebound. Coach Brad Simons credits the team's success on smart team play and aggressive defense. "These kids really click as a team and the don't want to disappoint their team mates," says Simons.

The Gold Crown Championship tournament is being held over the next two weekends with 48 teams competing in the 8th grade boys Gold tournament.
