The eighth grade boys Chatfield Gold Crown basketball team finished off a perfect season of 18-0 by beating Pueblo South by 15 points in the championship game. The Gold Crown Foundation is the largest competitive basketball league in the state with over 530 boys and girls teams for sixth through eighth grades. The mighty Chargers were the only undefeated team of the 48 teams in their league and were the #1 seed of the top 12 teams that made the tournament.
Landon Vermeer
was named the MVP of the championship game.
"The pressure was on going into the season end tournament as the only undefeated team," expressed Head Coach
Brad Simons
, "but we were up for the challenge and did what we needed to do like we have done all season...play smart, assertive team basketball and win!"
"It was truly a dream come true, especially for the five guys that have played on this team for all three years," said
Kyle Slavin
who at 6' 2" tall is the tallest member of the team.
In the excitement following the final game, three-year team member
Andrew Hood
shouted, "look out Chatfield (High School)...here come the Champions!" It will be fun to watch this talented group continue their success in high school. Congratulations!
