Blog Entry 170 of 181 Suburban Dementia
Expect me to write about the convergence of random events, the persistence of memory (Dali's melting version), juxtaposition of opposites, the phenomena of unintended consequences, and the mundane details of my life. Mostly, I expound on the absurdities of life in general, but the suburbs in particular.

DNC Day 2: Celebrity watch (in spite of myself)

Heading to Civic Center Park this afternoon to see lifeless protest puppets (having regrettably missed the show), I was just about to leave when the next speaker was announced: Darryl Hannah. So I caught a shot of her before I left like the rest of the sparse crowd. The organizer half-jokingly chastised the crowd for coming back when they heard her name, but that was kind of the point of having a celebrity on stage, wasn't it?

I feel conflicted by this sudden desire to photograph, however badly, celebrities. I like to think I have better things to do and yet I can't seem to stop myself. This morning people were standing in the middle of the Sixteenth Street mall, staring up at the Earl's restaurant balcony. Another man walked up the same time I did, asking, "So, is there something to see?"

I said, "I bet this is some kind of psychological test where everybody looks up just to see how many people join in."

"That's what I figured," he said.

Later, YourHub.com's Erin Feese told me she heard Susan Sarandon was at Earl's.

Next time a convention comes to town, I'm going to enlist a bunch of people to take my picture so everybody else will, wondering who I am. In the meantime, I seem to inadvertently get into everybody else's shot.
