Sky Ridge volunteers direct, deliver and more
Contributed by: Tabitha Dial/YourHub.com   on 6/21/2007

The space where Centennial residents Dan Seaman, and Jan Hurst spend four hours each week feels more like an elegant hotel than it resembles a hospital. Within view of their volunteer stations at the information desk at Sky Ridge Medical Centeris an ornate iron and wood railing that circles an opening in the floor that overlooks a tree in the hospital's garden level.

Though it may not at first seem as if Seaman and Hurst are at a m edical center, Sky Ridge is where they choose to volunteer, partly because they both have a history of volunteering in hospitals.

"I was a candystriper years ago, so it makes me feel very much at home," said Hurst.

Seaman was once a staffing co-ordinator for a 400-bed hospital in New York City.

"When I was in high school and college, I worked in hospitals. I've always liked hospitals and I don't look at hospitals as negative places," Seaman said.

Seaman and Hurst deliver DVDs and flowers, direct people to patient's rooms and doctor's offices and sometimes give tours of the hospital.

"One teenager, I swear, got a stuffed animal every half hour from a different friend," said Hurst.

Hurst said that she has been volunteering all her life and that friends and family just "think it's normal" that she volunteers four hours of her time each week at the hospital.

Sky Ridge's marketing and public relations manager, Nancy Falk, said that volunteers keep families up-to-date, bring them coffee and offer hugs to anyone who needs one."They work across the board."

There are 165 volunteers like Seaman and Hurst at Sky Ridge, according to John Penn, assistant director of family and visitor services at Sky Ridge. Penn places volunteers in 17 departments throughout the hospital, including the information desk, surgical waiting room, surgical services and all patient floors.

There are usually close to 50 students in the volunteer program. "Typically what I look for is that student who is pursuing a health care career," said Penn.

Anyone interested in volunteering at Sky Ridge Medical Center can contact John Penn at 720-225-1998 or John.Penn@Healthonecares.com.
