Blog Entry 58 of 82 The Happening

Steve Shultz here. I am the YourHub.com community journalist representing the vast and sunny land known as Highlands Ranch. My blog will present a quick synopsis of the hip, and maybe not so hip, happenings in Highlands Ranch and all the great photos and stories posted by residents just like you. Every now and again, I will rant and rave about what deeply interests me, and ask for your personal feedback. We like to be personal here at YourHub.com - YourHub.com is not just some nameless, faceless ghost.

First time for everything
Contributed by: Steve Shultz/YourHub.com   on 5/3/2007

Per Karin's request (and for personal enjoyment), here are a few of my son Prahlad's firsts.

He stopped peeing on me whenever I change his diaper. I guess that's a milestone.

Melinda and I took him to the park for the first time, City Park in Denver, on April 19. You can read more about that adventure here.

He is smiling now! I think he just started smiling a week or so ago. It's amazing to see your child smile for the first time. As Melinda says, "It melts you."

I wiggle his little chin and push his cheeks together to force a smile. Usually he'll crack a smile just by looking at my own smile. I even got a laugh out of him the other day. He seems to do most of his smiling when he wakes up in the morning and when I come home from work and stare at him. Maybe he just misses me during the day.

We just started reading to him last week. His first book, which I read to him, was Dr. Seuss' Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? He seemed to like all the onomatopoeias. We have since read another classic, The Cat In The Hat. He didn't make it all the way through that one (he got hungry).

His two-month checkup is coming up soon, so I will keep you all posted on his development statistics. I know he's gained quite a bit since his last visit.

Sandy: It's great being a dad. The first few weeks were mostly just getting used to the fact that I'm a dad now. He slept a lot more in the first two weeks. Also, we had family members over all the time during the first weeks. Do you hope to have kids sometime? Thanks for the comments.

How does it feel to be a dad? How were the first few weeks with your baby? My hubby is hinting around BIG time about starting our own... Little nervous about that.

Karin: His head strength -- and overall strength -- is superb. He hasn't begun to roll yet, but he certainly can hold his head up. And I can tell his legs are already strong, too.

He may have stopped peeing on you every time, but you'll still get peed on. Dang, he's cute. Looks like he has good head control. How's his upper body strength? Any rolling?
