Blog Entry 5 of 47 A view from The Hill
Hi, I'm Joey Kirchmer, author of this blog and a community journalist at YourHub.com. I live at the intersection of 13th and Washington, smack dab in the middle of Capitol Hill. If you have news tips about Capitol Hill or the greater Denver area, feel free to e-mail them to me at kirchmerj@yourhub.com. You can also call me at 303-954-2650. Cheeburger, Cheeburger the same old, same old
Contributed by: Joey Kirchmer/YourHub.com   on 1/23/2007

I was about halfway through my cheeseburger and onion rings at Cheeburger, Cheeburger in Lone Tree when I decided to admit defeat and throw in the (greasy paper) towel.

"Check please!" I said while checking to make sure my Kaiser Permanente ID card was close at hand.

Cheeburger, Cheeburger, which pays tribute to the classic Saturday Night Live skit that featured John Belushi, is a place for the biggest and the baddest of cheeseburger eaters.

Any restaurant that has a "Wall of Fame" for people who have dared to eat (and finish) one of the entrees on the menu probably boasts few "heart healthy" choices. In the case of Cheeburger, Cheeburger, there is a "Wall of Famers" for those who have dared to digest the "Famous Pounder" -- 20 ounces of cheesy, meaty delight on a bun for under $11.

There's even a wall of fame for kids who took down the 1/2 pounder, known as "The Serious."

Two things come to mind: the infamous scene in The Great Outdoors in which John Candy has to polish off a 6-pound steak called the "Ol' 96er" to earn his family a free meal and my high school friend, Heath, who once ate 30 soft tacos in a row at Taco Bell so he could win a free Rocky and Bullwinkle T-shirt.

Now that I think about it, I believe Heath got the free T-shirt simply by purchasing a 30-pack of tacos. He just decided to eat them all at once. This was a great man.

I decided to give my arteries a break today and settled on the "Semi-Serious" cheeseburger, a 7-ounce whopper, which comes with a lengthy choice of condiments including everything from A-1 steak sauce to banana peppers, all at no extra charge.

I kept it simple though -- American cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and mayo.

Add a small order of onion rings, a glass of water (which comes in a glass jar), pipe in some classic '50s tunes and we're in business. At least if you're willing to shell out $9.47.

There is a full roll of paper towels at every table and for good reason. The burgers here are big, greasy and messy. That's a good thing.

Otherwise, it's the same old, same old.

The stale '50s deco (see: Gunther Toody's, Johhny Rockets) a sign on the front door that claims they have the best cheeseburgers and shakes in the business, etc., etc. is just all too ordinary.

In my opinion, there are three things that can separate a burger apart from others -- special seasoning, special sauce and the bun.

The CityGrille in downtown Denver has remained a favorite among its patrons largely because it pays special attention to these key three ingredients - the special buns from Bluepoint Bakery and the intriguing combination of melted swiss, bacon and Caesar dressing.

To it's credit, though, it's the best burger I've had thus far in Douglas County but still, I probably won't be racing back anytime soon.

Final thought: Skip the dining experience and get it to go.

Cheeburger, Cheeburger is located at 9234 Park Meadows Drive in Lone Tree and at 11290 S. Twenty Mile Road in Parker.

Cheeburger-Cheeburger is fantastic. There aren't too many places where you can customize to the degree that they allow you to do so. I'll admit, they're pricey, but it sure beats the daylights out of Cheesey Janes (or, for that matter, your other favorite, McDonalds).

I agree with you on Gunther Toody's. Man, that place has needed to update its' decor for probably ten years now! Anyone old enough to appreciate the 1950's in all its' glory - probably shouldn't be eating their food.

Is there a Veggieburger, Veggieburger anywhere in Douglas County? I kind of doubt it ... Good review, though. 'The Great Outdoors' is a funny movie.

They have banana peppers included with the burger at no extra charge? Yes, that's the clincher for me. I will have to go and try Cheeburger, Cheeburger now.
