Blog Entry 162 of 270 Average Joe. Not.
I was born, therefore I blog. I have a sense of the ridiculous and need an outlet for that. I can be serious too and love to write little stories about little known but important people and events. And I love wildlife and travel and will always try to share those experiences. I make things up (its called fiction) and am amused when readers are duped into believing they are true.

A big hug on Earth Day
Contributed by: Joe McDaniel   on 4/21/2007

It was a beautiful morning so my wife and I decided to celebrate Earth Day in our own little way. Without fanfare we walked to the nearby open space and hugged a few trees. See photo. This not only reassured the trees after surviving a tough winter, but it also made us feel really good.

Our unselfish act is something we don't do every year. If the weather had been miserable we certainly would not have been so demonstrative. You see, we actually try and celebrate Earth Day every day.

We recycle plastics, glass, cans and paper; we share one car that gets 30 mph on the highway; we keep our programable thermostat set at 78 deg in summer and 68 deg. in winter. We rarely use our air-conditioning in summer and have installed ceiling fans in every room. When we leave the house for more than a day or two we set the thermostat on 60 degrees. Our furnace and water heater are energy-efficient and we even collect rinse water from the kitchen sink and throw it on the shrubs outside. We have a drip system for the garden and a sprinkler sytem for our small lawn that is carefully programmed to use water as efficiently as possible. (We don't water the lawn, for example, during or after it has rained like the city does.) Being empty nesters, we downsized our house seven years ago.

We have developed these habits because it is the right thing to do. We don't expect accolades nor do we expect to be nominated for environmentally conscious citizens of the year. Perhaps if we can reduce our carbon footprint enough some famous, wealthy, wasteful, public figures will buy carbon credits from us to offset the energy costs of maintaining their 20,000 sq. ft. single family homes. Hint hint.

We eventually were forced to purchase a standard gasoline-powered snow blower in March after we discovered, to our great disappointment, that hybrid snowblowers had not yet come on the market. But hey, we're not perfect.

In case readers may think we have developed these habits just to be politically correct, think again. In the 1970s I lived in a decidedly third-world African country. In the 1970s I installed passive solar panels on the roof of my house and consequently reduced my electricity bills by more than 40%. In the 1970s every glass bottle or jar, every piece of plastic and every newspaper from our household was set out for recycling - weekly. Every scrap of food trimmings went to feed our pet dogs or was thrown into the compost heap. Did I mention this was over 30 years ago? In a third world country?

So, don't let Earth Day pass you by without a few big hugs for our friends the trees. It's just the right thing to do.

Right thing indeed. The greening of our consumerism is long overdo.

That is so great! I wish they had a recycle pick up and not just trash pick ups for apartments!

Thanks, Joe. We planted 3 new juniper bushes, which will hopefully survive the latest snowstorm!

Thanks, Joe. Every day is Earth Day. Hug a tree, plant a tree, recycle, share rides, use public transportation, find second lives for things rather than send them off to landfills. We gotta get greener.

I agree with Karin. The squirrel thinks you want his nuts.

The pictured squirrel is not appreciating you hugging its tree. It is suspicious you are after its depleted nut stash. I know squirrelly thoughts.
