Area letter carriers collect 66,000 lbs.of food

Big thanks go to South Metro area communities for giving over 66,000 lbs. to letter carriers food drive for hungry May 9

Once again postal customers were very generous in giving to the annual letter carriers and postal food drive on May 9. In South Metro communities serviced by the Littleton Post Office, residents donated over 66,000 lbs. of food. That food will provide an estimated 51,000 meals to support the needy and the hungry.

All the food collected will go to local community food banks which support area organizations and programs serving the hungry throughout the year.

"Our community and postal customers really delivered to help stamp out hunger," says Katrina Lindell, Centennial Letter Carrier and Food Drive Coordinator). "With the poor economy, many more people and families are hurting. This food will go to those in our communities who most need it."

"We thank our postal customers for their giving, and we thank all of our letter carriers, food banks, volunteer organizations, and everyone who worked so hard to make the food drive a huge success once again. Thanks to you, many people in our community and area will not go hungry."

This was the 17th year of the one-day National Association of Letter Carriers "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive across America. Nearly a billion lbs. of food have been given to feed America's hungry since the letter carriers' food drive started in 1993. More than 10,000 communities and Post Offices nationwide participated this year.

While national, state and community totals are still being counted, it's estimated the letter carriers' food drive again collected over 70 million lbs. to support America's hungry.
