Waste Management offers single stream recycling
Contributed by: Lisa Wieting on 9/7/2006

September 7, 2006 (Denver, CO)...Waste Management of Colorado announced today that through the their completed construction of the single stream recycling plant located at 48 th and Franklin, Waste Management will be able to offer single stream recycling to the entire metro Denver area. The plant is the only facility in Colorado that can mechanically process all recyclable materials. With Single stream recycling, it is easier for customers to recycle. Customer's do not have to sort and divide their recyclables-all the items are placed in one 96-gallon toter. The system allows for more items to be recycled at one time than have been allowed before.

"Historically, Colorado has been ranked near the bottom third nationally in recycling," said Bill Bestreich of Waste Management. "With new this new multi-million dollar facility, we want to champion the cause and encourage our customers and all of the Denver metro area to recycle.

"Waste Management owns and operates one of approximately only 12 recycling facilities of this magnitude in the nation and we are the only recycling collection company in Denver offering single stream recycling that is processing their own recycling material and can guarantee our customers that their recyclables are getting to the right place," continued Bestreich. The difference in single stream recycling and other methods is that all recyclable materials are put into one container. Plastic, glass, aluminum cans, newspapers, magazines, office papers, phone books, cardboard and junk mail can all be put into one large container that is placed at the curb for collection which is then sent to the recycling plant. At the plant, the materials are sorted and baled and transported to processing plants across the country where they are converted to usable items.

Waste Management customers presently sort their recycling items into two or three bins. The plastic, glass and aluminum cans in one bin and newspapers in the other. The new 96 gallon toters will be delivered to Waste Management's customers over the next six months so that every customer will have the ability to use single stream recycling by the end of the year.

Waste Management currently has one of the largest paper recycling and processing plant in the country and has opened a Recycling Education Center at 48 th and Franklin. The Center features educational exhibits showing the recycling process, the biodegradable life of items in a landfill and what materials are made from recycled items. The center is open for tours to the public and to school and youth groups.
