Name:
Laura Harper O'Donnell
Position: Democratic candidate for Douglas County Sheriff
Age: 50
My family:
James O'Donnell, husband of 26 years;
Michael O'Donnell, son in Navy;
Miranda O'Donnell, daughter, a sophomore in high school.
What I do: Mother, wife and attorney.
My favorite place in Douglas County to hang out: Roxborough State Park
What I like most about living here: Sunshine and springtime fragrances.
My interests and hobbies: Reading, watercolor and dancing.
My favorite thing to cook: Okra
People who inspired me: My grandmother, who traveled to Texas in a covered wagon and faced numerous hardships with grace; my father,
Mel Harper, whose intelligence, inquisitiveness and hard work led him to be the first in his family to go to college and then around the world; my mother, who steadfastly does what is right.
How I have contributed to the community: I was a La Leche League Leader; volunteered in schools; petitioned for road improvements; performed low cost and free legal services.
What are the biggest issues facing Douglas County now: Increased population brings with it issues that must be addressed with a long term perspective, especially rising crime rates and accessible water. I also feel strongly that, with new technologies, we must be vigilant in protecting the Bill of Rights for future generations.
