To reduce red-light running, the City of Lone Tree has installed red-light enforcement cameras at the Park Meadows Drive and Lincoln Avenue intersection.
The red-light safety cameras began taking photos of violators on July 7. There will be 30-day warning period in which red-light violators will be mailed a warning notice and not fined. Citations will begin to be issued after the 30-day warning period on August 7.
"Our priority is to promote the safety and welfare of our residents by reducing the number of red-light running violations, and thus decreasing intersection crashes and injuries," stated Chief Steven Hasler. "Red-light running is completely preventable. The ultimate goal of the safety enforcement program is to change driver behavior by increasing driver awareness and discouraging dangerous driving and red-light running."
The cameras operate 24-hours a day and capture still images and video of every vehicle running a red-light at the intersection. The safety cameras only photograph a vehicle if it enters the intersection after the light has turned red. A second photograph is taken as the vehicle progresses through the intersection.
Vehicles that enter an intersection on a yellow light are not photographed even if they are still in the intersection when the light changes to red. The technology is designed to record motorists as they intentionally enter an intersection after the signal turns red.
The camera photographs the front and rear of the vehicle, the driver, and the intersection. The camera records the date, time, lane number, location and speed of the vehicle.
This information is included on the notice of violation and is then evaluated by the Police Department to verify that a violation has occurred and to determine whether a notice of violation should be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.
Violators will be assessed a $75 fine. Violations are not part of the driving record and no points are assessed.
