why I love the rockies...
On summer nights in Colorado, my favorite activity is going down to Coors Field to watch the Rockies play. When they are not at Coors Field, I love watching them on Fox Sports Network. When I am doing neither of these two things, I am thinking and planning on when I will be able to watch them next. I love the Rockies for two main reasons:
First of all, I love going to Coors Field to watch games. Nothing can replace the feeling of being in the ballpark, smelling hot dogs and Torn-a-doughs, watching the different people, and actually seeing the players that I have come to love so much. When I walk into the stadium, a feeling washes over me and I know happiness again. Nothing tops watching the sport that is known as America's pastime, and in some small way being a part of history on any given night. At one of the games I went to last week, my best friend and I looked at each other when we realized Matt Holliday had a new song while at bat. At that moment, we both knew we were devoted fans because we knew all the players songs, all the words to all the songs, and knew when one of them changed to a new song. I know the best places to eat while there, I have sat in various seats all over the stadium and can tell the pros and cons of each-from having fun in the Rockpile even though you feel a mile away, to sitting right behind the dugout and seeing the facial expressions on the player's faces, to sitting in rightfield to see Holliday with his bag of sunflower seeds.
Another reason I love the Rockies is because they always keep me on the edge of my seat. How easy is it would be to be a Yankees fan. Everyone, even people who aren't baseball fans, knows them, and they consistently do well. But with the Rockies, you never know how they will play that night. They could play amazing and show that they indeed deserved and earned the National League Championship last year, or their pitching could be off, or their hitting could be off. They may get you down in the first 7 or 8 innings, but then they can pull it off and make a great comeback. By going to so many games, I feel like I know each of the players personally, their strengths, their weaknesses and their tendencies.
I am a true Rockies fan. I know the darkest depths of defeat and disappointment, but I know the highs of success and celebration. I love this team. They are more than a baseball team to me. They are one of the few things in life one can always count on-through relationships, friendships, jobs, and perhaps even spouses, the Colorado Rockies will be there on that field to show a great game of baseball.
