Brewmeister - This ones for you!
Contributed by: Julie Robinson on 7/12/2006

I didn't like beer until I learned how to taste it ala Jim Stinson, brewmeister at the Rockyard in Castle Rock. A private tour of Castle Rock's only brewery ended up in my confession to the brewmeister that I don't like beer. He replied "That's because you don't know how to drink it." So, he preceded to take me through the steps of (1.) smelling the beer and enjoying the complexities of the smell, ( 2.) taking a big gulp into the back of your mouth "because the taste buds for bitter are on the back of the tongue", (3.) "wallering" it around, ( 4.) swallowing it, and then lastly, (5.) exhaling through your nose. I ended up enjoying the darkest beer the most, maybe because I'm a chocoholic. Right now there's a new brew called Wildcat Ale that smells like bananas.

I have made one video of Mr. Stinson showing us the brewery part of the Rockyard American Grill and Brewing Company. I intend to make one more just of the beer-making process and the three beer myths Mr. Stinson told us about. My favorite quote from Mr. Stinson came from Ben Franklin, a previous teetotaler who said: "God gave us beer because he loves us and wants us to be happy."

Today, we returned and enjoyed the sampler tray of all of the kinds of beer along with a fresh basket of hot chips with the famous cream of jalapeno soup as dip. I know that's not the way they sell it, but it's a great beer compliment.
