Fireworks in Lone Tree (Karin's 8/5 report)
Contributed by: Karin Malchow on 8/6/2008

No, nobody got feisty at the August 5 Lone Tree City Council meeting, like the Let's Govern Council explosion reported by John Brandstetter in January 2007. Or the Great Toilet Debate in September 2007. Or the Dumpster Dustup in November 2007. Instead, the Mayor announced Lone Tree's Fourth of July fireworks display (aborted after a little brush fire) will go off on Saturday, August 9 after the last summer concert in Sweetwater Park.

Just like our first annual exclusive event, which was wind-delayed (and I don't mean speeches), anybody can come now. Really, no wristbands. I think it has to do with South Suburban owning the park and the City lease was for another day. Last time the rescheduling didn't cause mass chaos, crime and disorder, so here's hoping.

In other Lone Tree news:

Hat in hand at Study Session

The South Suburban Park Foundation (separate from the South Suburban Park and Recreation District) wants a $15,000 - $20,000 City grant funding trail systems like Big Dry Creek and Willow Creek.

The South I-25 Urban Corridor Transportation Management Association wants $65,000 from the City to continue economic development along I-25 and the light rail. A special business district, Southeast Public Improvement Metro District (SPIMD, which the presenter pronounced as Spy-med,sounding like something from a Terminator movie) takes care of administrative expenses; municipalities fund public transportation subsidy programs and landscape maintenance.

Earning that $40,000

The Public Hearings on authorizing the recreation and arts bonds were continued to next meeting because the contracted bond lawyers are working on getting the City its first credit rating.

How do you grill chocolate?

Council approved a liquor license for a Vistas at Park Meadows restaurant called the White Chocolate Grille, scheduled to open in October.

Could it have anything to do with the new Cultural Center?

As I recall, not long ago the Arts Commission was begging for members. Now they added more positions to the committee after a slew of enthusiastic applicants

Gratitude abounds.

In Council Comments, Council members thanked: Metro Mayors for addressing health and obesity in a memorandum, Staff, volunteers, police, Public Works Director John Cotten, Arts Commission candidates, Council (that was the Mayor, announcing a new tradition), and everybody who comes to meetings.

You're welcome.
