I was at the Farmer's Market today, and was interested to see that the Longmont Republicans had a presence: a card table with a little stack of books, manned only by a dispirited youngish man slumped in a too-small folding chair. He looked like he had long since given up on getting anybody to stop and talk, and seemed about as happy as a guy who drew the short straw and had to run the NAMBLA booth at the state fair.
The wind was brisk and cold, and dark threatening clouds rolled in from the north, but he sat oblivious and idle as the other exhibitors hurriedly packed their gear to beat the rain. He seemed like a performance artist depicting the state of the modern GOP: "Heedless of the Coming Deluge" his work might have been called.
But as I hurried past this poor soul, avoiding eye contact and feigning interest in the nearby cucumber plants, I pondered: while he may have been having a discouraging Saturday, he's going to have a REALLY rough first Tuesday in November.
