Blog Entry 5 of 24 Another Home Office Inmate
Just another web consultant whose boss is a complete slave driver. But I take my revenge by reading - a lot - when he's not looking. I believe in the role of government to help improve society, but I'm fully aware of the dangers of entrenched bureacracy and the how money corrupts. I'm not so much a liberal as I am appalled by what passes for modern conservatism. And as the pendulum swings back and the left finds its voice and strength again, I'm ready to damn its excesses. "To you, I'm an atheist. To God, I'm the loyal opposition."

Light Rail An Economic Lifeline
Contributed by: Ralph Dosser   on 4/29/2008

The $100 tank of gas is going to be a killer for a lot of bedroom communities, but the coming light rail terminus near 1st and Terry could save Longmont from slipping down that hole, and could possibly even cause a development boom.

Recent news reports showed that the housing market collapse is hitting harder and faster in areas that have longer commutes.

But at the same time, areas near light rail are seeing boosts to both residential and commercial development.

Longmont is already well-positioned should rising prices revive the railroads as a primary means of commercial transport (yes, the locomotives run on diesel, but they're also very efficient compared to cars and trucks).

Meanwhile public transportation - the red-headed stepchild of American poltiics - is starting to look more like the nerdy kid that strikes it rich. Longmont should fight for the second rail line along the Diagonal Highway stretch, because it might just end up being an economic lifeline.

You are so right, Ralph. Our representatives, state and federal, need to hear from us. We need the extra funding to double-track FasTracks between Boulder and Longmont. I took the opportunity to make that case at a recent Town Hall to our state legislators. I hope others will take every opportunity as well. Metro Denver also faces an air pollution problem and FasTracks will help alleviate that as well.
