Financial Crisis? Are You Kidding Me?
Contributed by: Brad Jolly   on 11/17/2007

The St. Vrain Valley School District has been laying the public relations groundwork for a mill levy override, claiming that they absolutely need the money.

Perhaps the district ought to look at its own financial statements. According to the September 2007 Monthly Financial Report (the latest month available on the district's Web site), the financial situation is off to a roaring start after the first quarter of FY08 (the district's financial year began on July 1).

The following numbers compare September 30, 2007 (FY08) to September 30, 2006 (FY07).

Assets in the general fund are up by $3.2 million. Liabilities are also up, but only by $0.7 million, meaning the net assets in the general fund have increase by some $2.5 million.

General fund revenue is up by $3.2 million, or 14.38%.

Spending is also up, but only by 6.68%, meaning that the district's revenue outpaced its expenditures by $3,138,842 in the first quarter, a number 138% better than the first quarter a year ago.

There is more good news in the financial report; I will share that in future blog entries.

C'mon, Doug. That's not fair. I'll be the first to agree that the district doesn't always spend money very wisely, but hookers? I don't think there is a shred of evidence that the district spends money on that.
