Skyline Volleyball Awesome On, Off Court
Contributed by: Brad Jolly   on 12/20/2007

Congratulations to the Skyline high school volleyball team for being named Colorado's Volleyball Academic Team State Champions! The team's 16-5 record on the court proves that they are one of Colorado's better volleyball teams, and the academic award demonstrates that they are far more than just a great group of athletes.

According to the December 20 article in the Times-Call, Skyline's nine volleyball student-athletes registered a team average GPA of 3.84, a number which would be impressive even if the students were not spending a few hours per day practicing their sport and traveling to and from matches.

Nobody can say this is a fluke. According to school board member Rod Schmidt, Coach Rachael Ayers's athletes were second in the state in academics last year and first the year before that. Achieved excellence is impressive, but sustained excellence at the level the Skyline team has achieved is truly special.

The blog congratulates Kylee Hoagland, Mollie Jones, Cortney Martin, Erika Schmidt, Megan Wierzbinski, Ansley Elwood, Nellie Haghbin, Melinda Kolm and Whitney Oyster. May they continue to dig their classes and to fiercely spike the academic challenges in the remainder of their high school careers and in college.
