Blog Entry 14 of 35 Life in the St. Vrain
News and commentary on educational issues, especially as they pertain to education in the St. Vrain Valley.

SOOOO much to talk about!
Contributed by: Brad Jolly   on 5/31/2008

It has been several months since I posted to my YourHub blog. There is a lot to catch up on regarding the St. Vrain Valley School District. Here are a few topics you can look forward to seeing in upcoming blog entries:

1) Why the Niwot Elementary parents are getting ripped off
2) How we finally have a clear definition of SVVSD high school performance standards (warning: it's not pretty!)
3) How we can fund all schools like the best schools - without raising taxes
4) Why reducing class size doesn't work
5) How teacher compensation is driving the district's death spiral
6) Why a district break-up would help both Weld and Boulder county students
7) What the district doesn't want to know about CSAP scores
8) Why the district needs so many administrators
9) Why people cannot seem to find their checkbooks
10) Why the Charting Our Course projects failed so badly
11) Why the district is afraid of technology
12) Why the district and private sector people live in different worlds
13) Why people do not trust the district
14) How and why we should overhaul the district's math program
15) How we can help the district improve: meaningfully, quickly, and without raising taxes (dozens of future blog entries)

I look forward to intelligent discussion of these and many other items.

Hi Brigette, Thanks for the nice comments. You know the old saying about leading a horse to water, right? The district is claiming that it doesn't see any "water" (ways to improve student educational outcomes) short of raising funding yet again. I see it as my role to a) point out the numerous sources of cheap or free "water" to sate parched students and b) to protect taxpayers from needless tax increases. The good news is that we are virtually flooded with "water;" if the various school related boards and committees choose to ignore it, there is little that I can do.

Hi Brad, I think you have a lot of informed intelligent things to say and I'm interested to see what you have to say on all these topics...but how are you going to get any of them enacted? Why aren't you a consultant with the school district or are you on any of the school related boards that could enact some of your ideas? You spend a lot of time and effort and it would be nice to maybe see those ideas come to fruition.
